State Representative Jim Struzzi’s bill that would help prevent overdoses from a synthetic drug that’s sometimes blended in to other drugs has passed the state house and is now on its way to the Senate.
Struzzi’s bill would decriminalize fentanyl test strips for personal use. The bill is not meant to endorse drug use in anyway, but he said that this will give people a measure of protection against the deadly synthetic drug that is sometimes mixed into heroin to increase its potency to dangerous levels. He said that this legislation will be life-saving.
Under current regulations, anyone who possesses test strips would be convicted of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Struzzi says of the 107,000 overdose deaths in the US last year 71,000 were attributed to fentanyl. The bill now goes to the Senate.
