PennDOT is warning drivers to be careful about driving in work zones after several accidents were reported in work zones across the state.
The most recent incident reported by PennDOT was on June 5th in Allegheny County when a PennDOT employee was hit by a vehicle while the employee was working on a bridge replacement project. According to data compiled by the agency, 1,649 work zone crashes were reported in 2021, resulting in 16 fatalities. Since 1970, PennDOT has lost 90 workers in the line of duty.
PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian is urging motorists to keep the workers’ safety in mind as they travel through work zones.
Just a reminder, anyone caught going 11 miles an hour over the posted speed limit in a work zone, or who are involved in a crash in a work zone where they are convicted of speeding automatically lose their license for 15 days. Also, fines for speeding, DUI and other traffic-related offenses are doubled in active work zones.
