The Indiana County NAACP will celebrate Juneteenth today with a festival at Mack Park.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans, as the announcement of the freeing of slaves in Texas, which was the last state in the confederacy with institutional slavery.
While celebrations are traditionally held on June 19th, the Indiana County NAACP will hold it’s annual Juneteenth Cookout today at Mack Park from 5-8 PM. Some of the highlights of this year’s event include a memorial bench dedication in honor of a longtime Indiana County NAACP member at 5:10 PM, followed by keynote speaker Chad Lassiter, executive director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. A special awards ceremony will be held at 5:50 PM and Speaker Sheryl McCabe, the senior manager of Government and External Affairs will speak at 6:15.
