In a surprising turn of events, former hedge fund CEO David McCormick announced yesterday that he is conceding the Republican race for the U.S. Senate seat to former TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz.
McCormick’s decision to concede comes just days after a state court agreed with his campaign’s ballot-counting lawsuit, which focused on more than 800 mail-in ballots not containing a handwritten date beside the signature on the outside envelope. McCormick filed the lawsuit on the heels of an automatic recount between him and Dr. Oz’s votes, as they made up a difference of half a percentage point. It was believed, however, that, even if those votes were counted, McCormick may not have had enough support to overtake Oz in the election.
McCormick conceded from a hotel in Pittsburgh where he said that it was clear to him that “with the recount largely complete that we have a nominee.” He adds that he called Dr. Oz to congratulate him.
This sets up a general election for the U.S. Senate seat between Dr. Oz and current Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who earned 59 percent of statewide votes and 63 percent of votes from Indiana County.
The close contest between McCormick and Dr. Oz lasted approximately 18 days.
