Several criminal call hearings are scheduled for Indiana County’s Court of Common Pleas today, including two for a man who is charged in one case with assaulting a convenience store worker during a robbery of the store in Armagh.
State police have charged 27-year-old Nicholas Empfield in connection with an incident on January 7th at the One-Stop Service Station on Indiana Drive in Armagh. Police were dispatched at 6:18 AM after learning that someone entered the service station 12 minutes earlier, demanding money and shoving a female employee. As she fell, the back of her head hit a counter top, causing a cut. After the assault, Empfield allegedly went behind the counter and took nearly $1,900 from the Pennsylvania Lottery register before fleeing. Empfield is charged with robbery by force, robbery-inflicting bodily injury, aggravated and simple assault, theft, receiving stolen property and harassment in this incident.
In a second case, from December 23rd, he was charged with burglary, criminal trespass and theft by unlawful taking. In that case, he allegedly stole from the same convenience store, taking more than $3,300 and a grey metal lock box.
Criminal Call is designed to update the court and the parties involved on the progress of a case. Proceedings are usually postponed to a later date, but on occasion, guilty pleas have been entered at the Criminal Call phase.
