Pennsylvania State Police have released the statistics for Memorial Day weekend, and there was a decrease in the number of crashes and deaths on Pennsylvania roads.
Police say that over the four-day driving period, troopers investigated 775 crashes across the state, down from 844 the year before. There were three fatal crashes reported this year, compared to seven last year. Three people were killed in those crashes compared to eight people last year. There was an increase in the number of people who were injured, up from 183 last year to 191 this year. A total of 66 of the crashes were alcohol-related but none of the fatal crashes were related to alcohol. Police also made 526 DUI arrests and issued more than 9,900 speeding tickets, more than 1,000 seat belt citations and more than 230 Child Seat citations.
On the local scene, Troop A, which covers most of Indiana and Westmoreland Counties and all of Cambria and Somerset counties, investigated 40 crashes in the area. None of the crashes were fatal ones. Four people were injured and six crashes were alcohol related. A total of 31 DUI arrests were made, and troopers issued 854 speeding tickets, 92 seat belt citations and 13 child seat citations.
These are only for incidents on state roads that State Troopers investigated, and do not include activity from local police.
