Today is the first day of one of the busier travel periods of the year, and many motorists are expected to hit the roads, despite surging gas prices.
Triple A is predicting that more than 40 million people across America will travel at least 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend with today expected to be one of the busiest travel days. That’s an increase of 8.3 percent over last year’s figures, and bringing the total in line to what was seen on the roads in 2017. About 35 million Americans are expected to travel by car, which is an increase of 4.6 percent over last year’s numbers. Experts say that many people are trying to make up for time lost over the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
With the increase in the number of people driving, gas prices are expected to go up this weekend, but some gas price averages are not following traditional trends. The national average this morning, according to AAA is $4.59 a gallon, which is a one-cent drop from yesterday and about the same from one week ago. Last year at this time, the national gas price average was $3.04 a gallon. The statewide average this morning held steady over the last 24 hours at $4.76 a gallon. Last week, it was one cent higher at $4.77 a gallon. Last year, Pennsylvania’s average was $3.16 a gallon.
For Indiana County, the average is $4.69 a gallon this morning. Gasbuddy.com reports that gas prices in Indiana, Clymer and Blairsville boroughs are right on the county average at $4.69. Prices in Homer City Borough and Black Lick Township are $4.65 a gallon this morning.
