It will be a busy Friday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex as the Steelers have introductions of personnel and voluntary training camp on their minds.
It all starts this morning at 10 o’clock when new Steelers GM Omar Khan is formally introduced during a news conference. Khan’s welcoming ceremony will be live streamed on the team’s social media platforms and on Steelers Nation Radio – the team’s 24-hour digital radio station.
Then, the team hits the field for the third day of OTAs.
Some players, however, have yet to make an appearance at voluntary workouts. Wide receiver Diontae Johnson has yet to show up for workouts as he awaits a new contract, and defensive end Stephon Tuitt has not worked out with the team as he’s been recovering from a knee injury and the death of his brother.
Cam Heyward is optimistic that Tuitt will return to the team, saying he expects him back “sooner or later,” and that he is confident in him, saying “Last year is last year… I can’t imagine being in the situation he went through, but I’d like to think he’s in a better place.”
If Tuitt were to miss the year, he would carry a salary cap hit of more than $14 million.
On a positive note, wide receiver Chase Claypool told reporters that he thinks the team’s chemistry is “starting to form,” and that he’s starting to feel more like a team leader heading into the season.
Cornerback Levi Wallace, who spent last season as a member of the Buffalo Bills before the Steelers signed him in the offseason, talked about some of the things he loves about being with his new team.
One of the trouble areas for the Steelers last season was on the offensive line, but Mason Cole, who the Steelers also added via free agency this offseason, said that the offensive line room is “pretty good.”
Today is the last day of phase one for voluntary workouts. Action will pick back up next week.
