The Indiana County NAACP announced that the celebration of freedom/emancipation day known as Juneteenth will once again be celebrated this year.
Juneteenth represents one of the most important moments in the nation – when Texas became the last state in the country to end legalized slavery. Juneteenth also became a federal holiday last year on June 17th and its recognized across all 50 states, with some even offering it as a paid holiday.
This year’s theme is “Stronger Together: Community Unity, Meeting the Future Now,” and a commemorative cookout that’s spanned more than 25 years will return to Indiana County.
In a news release, the Indiana County NAACP says that the overall aim is to foster relationships to help build a more inclusive community that “supports our overall survival as a caring society.” The cookout will be educational and informative while promoting community involvement, but it will also be relaxing, encouraging and interactive.
