An Indiana man was arrested by Westmoreland County detectives yesterday in connection with a drug smuggling scheme at the county prison.
43-year-old Brad M. Rentz was taken into custody and an arrest warrant was issued for an Indiana woman described as Rentz’s girlfriend, 32-year-old Danielle N. Kemp.
Rentz was an inmate at the prison earlier this year when authorities say he conspired with another inmate, 33-year-old Jamie Rayques Espy of Southwest Greensburg, to smuggle drugs into the prison. The scheme involved Rentz phoning Kemp whenever Espy had a medical appointment at Excela Latrobe Hospital, and Kemp hiding the drugs in a men’s restroom at the hospital. Espy would then take the drugs from the restroom and he and Rentz would sell them to other inmates. The plot was discovered by monitoring inmate phone calls.
Espy was charged last week. Rentz was serving a prison sentence of 90 days to a year for theft and was out on parole when he was arrested yesterday. He is charged with two felony contraband counts. Kemp, who along with Rentz is also charged in a December case of flight to avoid apprehension, is now facing the same two felony counts that Rentz is charged with for contraband along with felony possession with intent to deliver.
Rentz is jailed with bond set at $50,000. Kemp is not yet in custody.
