A new report by the website moneygeek.com examines every fatal accident on Pennsylvania roads between 2017 and 2019 and identifies the deadliest roads in every county.
Indiana County had the most fatal accidents on Route 422, which is designated the Benjamin Franklin Highway and bisects the county from the Cambria County line to Armstrong County. There were 28 fatal accidents on the highway in the three-year period. The report also details contributing factors to the crashes and finds 12 of them were speeding-related, six involved drunk driving, and in one, distracted driving was a factor.
The most deadly highway in the state was US Route 1 in Philadelphia, which had 277 fatal accidents in the three years. Eight of the top ten were in the eastern half of the state, with the two most deadly in the west being Allegheny at number two and Westmoreland at number seven.
Among our neighbors, Clearfield County was number 26, Cambria number 29, Armstrong was number 42, and Jefferson was in a three-way tie for 58th of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania.
The report also listed the top ten deadliest stretches of highways and found the 4.3 miles of route 22 designated as the William Penn Highway, from just east of Delmont and Hannastown Road in Salem Township, Westmoreland County was eighth.
October, June, and July were the three deadliest months on Pennsylvania roadways between 2017 and 2019.
