Another entity has announced an intention to buy Spirit Airlines two months after a merger of Spirit and Frontier Airlines was announced.
According to reports, JetBlue Airways officials announced on Tuesday that it made an unsolicited $3.6 billion bid for the low-cost airline, potentially making the merger more difficult. Officials added that the deal would make the New York-based airline a stronger competitor among U.S. based airlines. The company is looking to expand the locations it flies to through the purchase. Under the purchase, Spirit would operate under the JetBlue brand name.
The bid is about 33 percent more than what Frontier offered to acquire the low-cost airline. Spirit Airline officials declined comment, but did say that the company would review the offer.
Spirit Airlines offers low-cost flights to various vacation destinations. One of the airports Spirit flies out of is nearby Arnold Palmer Regional Airport.
