The Pirates are preparing to end spring training and travel to St. Louis for Thursday’s season opener against the Cardinals. They’ll play the Orioles today in Sarasota, with Bryse Wilson getting the start. Then Zach Thompson starts against the Phillies tomorrow in Clearwater. The Pirates will then work out in St. Louis on Wednesday prior to Opening Day.
Yesterday, the Bucs played their last game in Bradenton, against the Rays. Joe Block has the recap.
One of the mysteries of spring training has been filling out the rotation. We still don’t know all of the pieces, but manager Derek Shelton announced on the Pirates’ telecast yesterday that JT Brubaker will start Thursday’s season opener.
Brubaker is 1-1 this spring with a 4.50 ERA.
The loss to the Rays might have been costly for the Pirates. Outfielder Greg Allen, who appeared to have won the left field job, came up lame after sliding home with the Pirates’ first run. He had apparent soreness in his left hamstring. First baseman Yoshi Tsutsugo left the game with a stiff neck, and infielder Cole Tucker grimaced noticeably after sliding into third in the first inning, but remained in the game. Outfielder Anthony Alford, who has struggled again at the plate this spring, appears headed to the injured list with a right hand injury.
