Indiana Borough Council had a lengthy discussion on the issue of decriminalizing marijuana during their work session on Tuesday night.
The majority of those speaking during public comment were against reducing the punishment for possession of a small amount of marijuana and possibly cover drug paraphernalia used to smoke marijuana. One of those was Sandy Waldenville, the mayor of Ernest Borough, who said that the decisions on this issue will not only affect the people of Indiana Borough, but the surrounding areas as well.
Indiana County District Attorney Bob Manzi also made a presentation at the invitation of the council. His main question was “What Is Council Trying To Accomplish?” and he said that while he did not get an answer to that question, it may not have been borough council’s goal to answer that question.
The issue of the ordinance now goes to the Community Development committee for further discussion, and it will be on the agenda for their meeting on April 18th at 7:00 PM. The meeting, like all committee meetings, will be open to the public.
