Pitt wrapped up its non-conference schedule yesterday with a 64-55 win over Jacksonville. The Panthers were led to their second straight win by guard Femi Odukale, who turned around a poor performance against St. John’s with a bounceback 28-point performance.
The Panthers jumped out to an 18-8 advantage but coach Jeff Capel said they lacked energy and they did not find it until near the end of the first half, when they went on a 12-0 run. Mahamoudu Gueye slammed home two hard dunks to fuel the run and also had 12 rebounds and four blocks. Jamarius Burton scored 12 for Pitt.
Capel says the Panthers are never going to win games “pretty” because they are not a good-shooting team. So they’re going to have to scrap for every win.
Pitt opens ACC play at the Petersen Events Center against Notre Dame next Tuesday night.
