The Penguins and the rest of the NHL are shut down for the rest of this week. That means no game tonight against New Jersey, and no one is allowed at team facilities until Sunday.
The NHL yesterday afternoon postponed the Penguins game against the Devils tonight because of covid-19 issues within the Devils organization, but later in the night the league announced that all NHL activities would cease until after Christmas.
The Penguins were able to get a brief practice in before the league’s announcement, which will also postpone a Thursday night game against Philadelphia. Coach Mike Sullivan says they’be been fortunate to keep winning despite their own covid issues.
Sullivan said it’s a tough time to remain focused on hockey anyway, as evidenced by a ragged game Sunday night, but covid has complicated matters even further.
Sullivan said skating and skills development coach Ty Hennes remains in covid protocol and is mildly symptomatic.
At the practice yesterday, the Penguins welcomed back injured forwards Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust, and Brian Boyle, and center Evgeni Malkin skated as well. All four wore white non-contact jerseys. Jason Zucker was not on the ice. He had a “maintenance day” on Saturday, played in Sunday’s game, and then was off again yesterday.
