Westmoreland County District Judge Denise Thiel has set bond for Ray Shetler at $250,000 and scheduled a preliminary hearing for him on December 17th for the new charges Shetler faces related to his arrest for skipping a probation hearing earlier this month.
Shetler, who was acquitted in 2018 on murder charges in the 2015 shooting death of Saint Clair Township police officer Lloyd Reed, was taken into custody Tuesday after hiding out at a mobile home. He resisted arrest and required hospitalization in Pittsburgh, receiving staples to close a cut on his head and suffering a left eye injury. An arresting officer was also injured.
Shetler told Thiel in a video hearing on Friday that the Westmoreland County Prison staff mistreated him and could not properly care for his injuries, and that if he loses vision in the eye, he will sue. He’s charged with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor resisting arrest. Thiel ordered Shetler held on the probation violation at least until after his new criminal case is resolved.
