While an extended bear hunting season is going on in parts of Pennsylvania, much of the bear hunting season has wrapped up and so far, more than 3,000 bears have been taken.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission reports that 1,311 bears were harvested during the firearms season, another 1,190 were harvested during the combined seasons of archery, muzzleloader and lightweight firearms, and seven were taken in the early archery season in place for three wildlife management units. Add that to the 493 bears taken so far in the extended bear season so far, Pennsylvania’s total bear harvest is 3,001. Many of the bears taken during the firearms season were taken Saturday, November 20th, as the Game Commission reported 800 bears taken that day alone.
In Indiana County, 12 bears were taken during the four-day bear season, but that is not the final total. The 2C wildlife management unit, which has a portion of southeastern Indiana County in it, is a part of the extended season.
Deer season continues today throughout Pennsylvania, and as tradition holds, many schools in the district are closed today with the exception of the River Valley School District, which is open for classes as normal today.
