On Tuesday, the River Valley School Board approved a proposal from a Harrisburg firm to study the voting districts and if they need to be re-drawn.
The professional service proposal was from DT Firm to present three to five suggested voting district reapportionment options. Board President Rick Harper said that the idea of reapportionment stems from the results of the 2020 census.
The motion passed 6-3 with board members Holly Hall, Beverly Carnese and Linda Brown voting against the measure. Before the vote was taken, Hall accused Harper of not bringing the matter before the board in a proper manner.
After the meeting, Harper said that all Sunshine Law rules were followed.
We also reached out to Hall, who said it was a matter of following the proper procedure, not about who he could talk with.
In other business, the board hired Holly Rougeaux as the new assistant superintendent for the district. She was a former principal in the Homer-Center School District, assistant principal in the Indiana Area School District and an assistant Dean at IUP before coming to River Valley as an assistant to the superintendent for curriculum.
The board also approved the hiring of Remington and Vernick Engineers to perform a feasibility study for the district concerning the possibility of a new football stadium for the River Valley Panthers. Harper said that the district would receive $2 million in refundable money for the potential project through RACP funding. Both decisions came down to a 6-3 vote, with Hall, Carnese and Brown again voting against the motions.
The next board meeting will be December 7th as the board will install the newly-elected members and hold their reorganization meeting.
