Tonight at Memorial Field in Homer City, the Homer Center Wildcats squaring off with the Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders in the District 6 Class A Football Semifinals, with the winner earning the opportunity to play for the district title next week at Mansion Park in Altoona.
Second seeded Homer Center and number three Bishop Guilfoyle have established a bit of a playoff tradition in recent, with BG leading the almost-annual matchups, three games to two over the last eight years. The Marauders have won the last two games, 42-0 in 2018 and 48-13 last year. Homer Center won, 20-14 in 2017 on their way to the District 6 championship and an eventual appearance in the state championship game.
Homer Center coach Greg Page says it will be a test of two good teams, and even if it’s a bit uncomfortable for the fans watching, the teams will be full steam ahead.
Page says the keys to winning are the same as in any game, especially with BG’s opportunistic defense.
Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler says his team’s biggest challenge tonight will be stopping Homer Center’s run game.
Wheeler says his offense, like most, will look to run the ball, but he wants to be able to throw, too.
Homer Center beat Glendale last week, 35-14 while BG eliminated Purchase Line, 38-8. The winner tonight will play the winner of the other semifinal game, between top seed Juniata Valley and number four Portage.
