The Pirates yesterday returned right-handed pitcher Jose Soriano to the LA Angels, a year after making him the number-one overall selection in the Rule 5 Draft. Soriano was coming off Tommy John surgery when the Pirates selected him, and had to have revision surgery in June. He was designated for assignment last week and by rule the team had to offer him back to the Angels.
Seven minor leaguers were released yesterday, mostly from the lower levels. One player, catcher Arden Pabst, was released after playing last season at Altoona, where he hit .194 with seven home runs. He was the Pirates’ 12-round draft pick in 2016.
