After a promising start to the season, the Penguins have struggled. They are in seventh place in the eight-team Metro Division heading into tonight’s game at Buffalo. The Penguins are two points ahead of the Islanders and two behind both the Flyers and the Blue Jackets. They are also eight points behind division-leading Carolina.
The Pens had the day off yesterday.
The Penguins’ power play is dead last in the NHL, with only four goals on 46 chances, a success rate of just 8.7 percent. CoachMike Sullivan says a big part of the problem has been the number of players who have missed time with injuries and covid-19. He says they just have not had the ice time to work on the man-advantage.
The Penguins’ penalty kill percentage took a big hit over the weekend, falling from first in the league to seventh, at 86.1 percent. They entered the weekend games against Ottawa and Washington at 93.3 percent, having allowed just two goals on the kill all season long.
Buffalo started the season 5-1-1 but has lost six of its last seven games.
Because of tonight’s IUP basketball game on WQMU, the Penguins/Sabres game will be on WCCS, 101.1 FM and AM 1160, starting with the pregame at 6:00.
The NHL has postponed Ottawa’s next three games, against the Devils, Predators, and Rangers, after a covid-19 breakout among the Senators.
