Kenny Pickett hit tight end Lucas Krull with an 11-yard touchdown pass in overtime and backup defensive back M. J. Devonshire then intercepted a pass by North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell as Pitt knocked off North Carolina, 30-23, in a Thursday night ACC football game.
It was far from a perfect game as the Panthers missed two field goals and an extra point and the offense sputtered, with Pickett getting sacked four times, but he still completed 25 of 44 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Pickett passed Alex Van Pelt to become the all-time leader in passing yards for the Panthers’ program. He outdueled Tar Heels star Howell, who threw for 296 yards but was sacked five times and was stopped on a crucial fourth down run in the third period.
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi says his team earned the win.
Narduzzi credited an unusual source for helping the Panthers prepare to play a rare Thursday night game.
Pitt is 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the ACC Coastal Division. They have a one-game lead over Virginia in the Division, with the Cavaliers scheduled to play at Heinz Field next Saturday.
