Pirates catcher Jacob Stallings, centerfielder Bryan Reynolds, and shortstop Kevin Newman have been named finalists for the National League Gold Glove awards. For Stallings, it’s his second straight nomination. Reynolds and Newman are finalists for the first time.
The Pirates concluded their minor league awards yesterday by naming outfielder Matt Frazier their Honus Wagner Player of the Year. He led the Pirates’ system with a .306 batting average, and led as well in hits, total bases, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS, playing for Greensboro and Altoona.
In an organization loaded with minor league pitching talent, the Bucs named Low-A Bradenton pitcher Adrian Florencio their Bob Friend Pitcher of the Year. The 6-6 righty was 6-4 with a 2.46 ERA and an organization-leading 117 strikeouts, and had a .198 batting average against.
General Manager Ben Cherington also said yesterday that the team will hire a hitting coach from outside the organization and will look for a new big league third base coach and a manager for Triple-A Indianapolis internally. Cherington also said third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes will not need surgery on his injured left hand and the team is interested in re-signing first baseman/outfielder Yoshi Tsutsugo.
