Pitt handed Clemson its first double-digit loss to an ACC team since 2014 yesterday as quarterback Kenny Pickett threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-17 Panthers victory.
Pickett was 25-for-39 passing and passed Alex Van Pelt for the most career completions in Pitt history. Pickett led two straight touchdown drives late in the second quarter to put the Panthers ahead. He hit Jordan Addison in the back of the end zone for a 23-yard score and followed up with a 39-yard TD pass to a wide open Taysir Mack on a 4th-and-5 play.
Panthers linebacker SirVocea Dennis then returned an intercepted shovel pass by Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei 50 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter that gave the Panthers a 14-point lead. Uiagalelei passed for just 128 yards and two picks and was briefly benched in favor of backup Taisun Phommachanh in the third quarter after his baffling shovel pass hit Dennis right in the middle of the No. 7 on the front of his jersey.
Pitt is 6-1, and 3-0 in the ACC. The Panthers host Miami next Saturday. The Hurricanes have won each of the last three meetings with Pitt by an average of 12.3 points.
