Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says that “you can’t replace JuJu,” referring to JuJu Smith-Schuster, the wide receiver who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery yesterday.
Smith-Schuster injured the shoulder on a run in Sunday’s win over Denver. Big Ben said he will make a more concerted effort to pass the football to rookie tight end Pat Freiermuth in JuJu’s absence, and he hopes the running game continues to boost the offense.
The running game took a big step forward Sunday and Roethlisberger said that as Najee Harris continues to mature as an NFL player, the ground game will get even better.
Big Ben said the offense played its best game of the season on Sunday, but it still has a long way to go.
At practice yesterday, cornerback Cam Sutton and linebacker Devin Bush returned as full participants. Both have groin problems, as does wide receiver James Washington, who was a limited participant. Other limited participants were receiver Chase Claypool, defensive end Cam Heyward, and defensive tackle Carlos Davis, all of whom are dealing with injuries. Roethlisberger, guard Trai Turner, and linebacker Melvin Ingram had the day off.
Well-traveled cornerback Linden Stephens was signed to the Steelers’ practice squad. The undrafted free agent is with his eighth organization since 2018.
