IUP SWIMMERS SPLIT, FIELD HOCKEY FALLS SHORT, SOCCER WINS IN OT

SWIMMING

National champion Paige Mikesell broke two pool records and hit a NCAA B cut time to highlight the 2021-22 season opener for IUP swimming in a Wednesday road dual meet against Shippensburg.

Mikesell hit her NCAA B cut time in the 200 freestyle, breaking the 35-year old record set by Clarion’s A’Lisa Woicicki in 1986. Mikesell was also part of IUP’s 200 medley relay that broke the Shippensburg pool record.  She was joined on the winning team by Amber Baldani, Rachel Johnson, and Iliana Oikonomou.

The IUP women defeated Shippensburg by a score of 151-54. The IUP men lost to the Raiders 118-86.

In addition to Mikesell, other IUP individual winners in the pool included Heather Hartmann, AB McCullough, Johnson, Baldani, Clara Gracia, and Claire Mikesell.  Oikonomou, Johnson, Baldani and McCullough also won the 200 relay.

On the men’s side, individual winners included Adam Morrison, Thomas McGillan, and Kyle Thome.

FIELD HOCKEY

The 10^th -ranked IUP field hockey team lost on the road at Mansfield, 2-0 yesterday.   The loss drops the Hawks to 8-3 overall and 3-3 in the league. Mansfield improved to 7-6 and is also 3-3 in the PSAC as the two teams are now tied for fifth in the standings with four conference games left.

SOCCER

Senior Mahogany Willis scored the game-winning goal seven minutes into overtime as IUP women’s soccer completed a 4-3 comeback road win over Edinboro.

Willis had the hat trick, scoring in the 43^rd, 65^th, and 98^th minutes. It was her eighth career multi-goal game and her second career hat trick. She’s the first IUP player since Sarah Romasco to record more than two hat tricks in a career.

It was the third straight win for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 7-3-1 overall and moved into a tie with Mercyhurst for third place in the PSAC West at 6-3-1.  Hannah Scardina also scored for IUP, which trailed 2-0 in the game.
