The Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education will open its two-day quarterly meeting today with discussion on a number of topics, and the steep declines in enrollment at its universities will be among them.
Figures released Monday showed declines at all but the two smallest schools, Cheney and Mansfield, which both recorded modest increases. IUP’s drop in enrollment for the start of the academic year was the highest of all, with 759 fewer students this year than last.
Among the actions the board is expected to take is the naming of one of the two university entities created by the mergers of three schools in the western half of the state and three in the northeast. The western school, created by the consolidation of California, Clarion, and Edinboro, will be named today. The northeastern school created by the merger of Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, and Mansfield, will get its name at a later date after further market analysis is completed.
The Board is expected to approve the fiscal year budgets and the appropriation request for each university and the System’s operations. The capital project budgets are also on the docket for the board today. IUP shows an anticipated $50 million project for a general education building in the 2023/24 fiscal year.
