IUP swept the women’s tennis PSAC singles and doubles individual tennis championships yesterday, but it could not have been any other way as the Crimson Hawks opponents were the Crimson Hawks. IUP eliminated all other opposition over the weekend at Bloomsburg.
In the singles championship, Karolin Kirchtag defeated Natasha Munday, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 in a repeat of last week’s ITA Atlantic Region final. In doubles, Kirchtag teamed with Katy Graydon to knock off teammates Munday and Joanna Stralka, 8-5.
Kirchtag swept the singles and doubles championship both at the Regional last week and the conference level this week. She’s a combined 19-0 on the court this year. It’s just the fifth time in PSAC history that a player won both singles and doubles titles and Kirchtag is the second player ever to accomplish the feat at both the Regional and the conference tournaments. Kirchtag and Graydon will play next Thursday at the Division II ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia.
FIELD HOCKEY:
Blaise Cugini scored a goal and assisted on one as IUP shut out Seton Hill, 2-0 last night at Miller Stadium.
IUP opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a Georgiana Chiavacci goal off a rebound of a Cugini shot. Midway through the third quarter, Cugini deflected a Rory Cahill shot into the net. IUP outshot Seton Hill, 20-4, in the game.
