In his final pitching performance of the season, Roansy Contreras completed the hat trick, pitching in Double-A, Triple-A, and the Major Leagues. But his teammates couldn’t come through for him as the Pirates lost to the Cubs.

Pirates manager Derek Shelton was impressed by the maturity of the 21-year-old Contreras.
With two more hits last night, Bryan Reynolds upped his batting average to .298. Shelton says Reynolds is a complete player who continues to improve.
The series concludes tonight at PNC Park. Miguel Yajure will start for the Pirates against the Cubs’ Justin Steele. Yajure and Roansy Contreras were two of the four prospects the Bucs got from the Yankees in return for Jameson Taillon last January. Yajure is 0-1 with a 4.85 ERA in three appearances for the Pirates this season. It’s a 6:10 airtime on WCCS.
The Pirates must win their final four games to avoid 100 losses for the season.
INJURY WOES
Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes was placed on the ten-day injured list yesterday, ending his season. Hayes has a sore left wrist again. He missed almost two months with the injury when he hurt himself making a swing in the second game of the season, but director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk says this injury is in a different place on the wrist.
Injured pitchers JT Brubaker, Luis Oviedo, Connor Overton, and Dillon Peters also are done for the year.
Reynolds yesterday was named the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award as Pirates MVP by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Relief pitcher David Bednar was named the Steve Blass Award winner as the top pitcher, and catcher Jacob Stallings won his second consecutive Chuck Tanner Award for media cooperation.
LIGHTING IT UP IN INDY
You might say that former Altoona Curve shortstop Oneil Cruz is enjoying his promotion to Triple-A Indianapolis. Cruz was 4-for-5 with a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth last night in a win over Nashville. He’s hitting .526 since arriving in Indy.
