On last night’s premier episode of “Hawk Talk” on 92.5 FM U92, IUP head football coach Paul Tortorella talked with Jack Benedict about the challenge of coaching the Crimson Hawks to a win over Kutztown on Saturday despite missing a number of players and coaches due to covid quarantine. Tortorella said he’s pretty sure he’ll get his coaches back at some point this week but he had no information on the missing players, who included All-American defensive back Nazir Streater.
Tortorella said IUP will handle the situation this week as they prepare for another nationally-ranked opponent, in 2-0 Shepherd.
Hawk Talk airs on U92 and on the U92 YouTube channel from 6 to 7 each Monday night from CH Fields at the Hilton Garden Inn. You can attend the show in person and ask questions of the coach, Jack, and other guests. You can also watch last night’s show again on the U92 Facebook page.
IUP moved up three spots to number fourteen in the nation in the AFCA coaches poll and rose one spot to number-19 in the D2Football.com media poll this week. This week’s opponent, Shepherd, is up to number nine in the coaches poll and number eleven in the media poll. Slippery Rock is number six and number nine in the two polls.
Junior defensive tackle Raunya Mitchell was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week and sophomore punter Dylan Grubbs is the Special Teams Athlete of the Week. Mitchell picked off a tipped pass and scored on a 26-yards return in Saturday’s win and Grubbs averaged 50.6 yards on five punts, including a 66-yarder.
