On Thursday night, the Penns Manor school board heard from some members of the public who were against the recent PA Department of Health mandates requiring masks be worn in K-12 schools.
During public comment, discussion was heated over the mandates. Some, like Matthew Lapso of Clymer, wanted the board to go against the mandates.
Another comment that was brought up was the letter from Dr. Yeager and Heritage Family Health that were downloaded from their website. Some district parents said they submitted Dr. Yeager’s letter but it was rejected by the district. District solicitor Paul Saffron said that it came down to Section 504 of the Department of Education criteria, which outlines conditions that students who do not qualify for special education services that could still qualify them for other services. Saffron said that the letter from Heritage Family Health was nothing more than an opinion from Dr. Yeager, and was not specific enough for the particular student.
In other business, the board accepted the resignation of board member Dr. Paul Boston, which was submitted the same day as the meeting. No reason was provided for his resignation. The board will advertise for people interested in filling his position, representing a portion of Cherryhill Township. A special meeting will be held October 7th to choose a new board member.
