With Sunday’s opener against Buffalo approaching, the Steelers welcomed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to practice for the first time yesterday. They acquired the five-year veteran from Seattle on Friday in exchange for a fifth-round draft choice next year.
Witherspoon played the first four years of his career with San Francisco and signed with the Seahawks in the off-season. He says his skills as a man-to-man cover corner fits the Steelers well.
TJ Watt was not at practice yesterday as another day passed without a new contract for the star linebacker.
The Steelers have reduced the number of team captains to only three. Ben Roethlisberger is the captain of the offense, Cam Heyward leads the defense, and Derek Watt will captain the special teams.
The Steelers depth chart was released yesterday for the first time this season, and all of the team’s top four draft picks this season are listed as starters on the offense: Running back Najee Harris, tight end Pat Freiermuth, center Kendrick Green, and tackle Dan Moore. Freiermuth shares top billing at tight end with veteran Eric Ebron.
