A rookie designated hitter did in the Pirates last night in Chicago.

Manager Derek Shelton says he wasn’t surprised that Gavin Sheets put a couple of good swings on the ball last night.
Cole Tucker is getting another chance to stick with the Pirates, and the shortstop was back in right field last night. He says it’s different playing the outfield than in the infield.
Shelton says third baseman Ke’Byran Hayes took grounders and threw yesterday but he won’t be swinging a bat until the swelling goes down in his injured hand.
Other Pirates injury news from director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk included updates on infielder/outfielder Michael Chavis, who will be out another five to seven days with a shoulder injury suffered while diving for a ball last Sunday; and pitchers JT Brubaker and Dillon Peters, who are throwing again. Brubaker has a hand injury and Peters a sore back.
With rosters expanding from 26 players to 28 yesterday, the Pirates added pitchers Max Kranick and Shelby Miller. Kranick started last night and gave up five earned runs in four-and-two-thirds innings. Miller came out of the bullpen and pitched one scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.
Outfielder Gregory Polanco, who was released by the Pirates on Saturday, has signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, and will play for their Triple-A Buffalo farm team.
The four surviving members of the Pirates’ history-making lineup of September 1st, 1971 were honored last night in an event at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. Al Oliver, Dave Cash, Gene Clines, and Manny Sanguillen were all part of the first-ever all-black starting nine fielded by manager Danny Murtaugh 50 years ago in a 10-7 Pirates win over the Phillies. The other five starters that night, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Dock Ellis, Rennie Stennett, and Jackie Hernandez, all have passed away.
The event included the unveiling of a painting featuring the starting nine, with Three Rivers Stadium in the background.
