Manager Derek Shelton admires Yoshitomo Tsutsugo’s willingness to work on his game after being a star for many years in Japan.
With four innings of scoreless relief from Chad Kuhl, David Bednar, and Chris Strattan, the Bucs’ bullpen shut down the Cardinal’s offense. Shelton says Kuhl is making the adjustment from starter to relief pitcher well, even though it is likely not a permanent move.
The Pirates are off today and start a six-day visit to Chicago tomorrow, with two games against the White Sox on the South Side, and then crosstown against the Cubs for four more this weekend.
Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes left the game in the 8th inning yesterday after experiencing pain in his right hand. Shelton says X-rays were negative and the team considers it a contusion for now, with a re-evaluation and treatment scheduled today. Hayes missed almost all of the first two months of the season with a left wrist injury.
The Altoona Curve were rained out last night against Richmond, and the game will not be rescheduled. The Curve were leading 3-1 in the top of the 4th inning when the rains came.
