The Steelers released nine players on Saturday. Most notable among them was wide receiver/return man Mathew Sexton. Sexton was challenging Ray-Ray McCloud for the return job and had impressed the Steelers coaches, but he muffed two punts against Carolina on Friday.
Also released on Saturday were former Penn State safety Lamont Wade, former Pitt cornerback Lafayette Pitts, tight end Marcus Baugh, running back Tony Brooks-James, cornerback Shakur Brown, defensive tackle T.J. Carter, wide receiver Anthony Johnson, and guard Malcolm Pridgeon.
With a roster of 71 players remaining, the team must trim 18 more by Tuesday to get down to the roster limit of 53.
