Coach Mike Tomlin said yesterday that he will hold a number of “regulars” out of the lineup tomorrow night in the preseason finale against Carolina. That includes both Ben Roethlisberger and backup quarterback Mason Rudolph, and that means former Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins will start at QB and see extensive time under center. The only other quarterback on the roster is Josh Dobbs.
Tomlin says he’s excited to see Haskins play against the Carolina “varsity.”
Tomlin says the game at Carolina will be a great opportunity for young guys trying to make the roster as final cuts come on Tuesday.
Also sitting out tomorrow night will be top draft pick Najee Harris, who will be replaced at running back by Benny Snell, seeing his first game action of camp in his return from injury.
Tomlin also said he’ll be watching the special teams position battles play out, with decisions to be made at punter and long snapper. And rookie seventh-round draft choice Tre Norwood will work at nickel cornerback for the first time, after playing safety in the first three games.
