The Steelers had to make five roster cuts yesterday and one of them, 2020 sixth-round draft choice Antoine Brooks Jr. was a big surprise. He was waived/injured after missing the last three weeks with a lower leg injury. Brooks was thought to be in the running to be start as the nickel/cornerback, replacing the departed Mike Hilton.
The Steelers also cut wide receiver Tyler Simmons, running back Pete Guerriero, offensive lineman Aviante Collins, and linebacker Calvin Bundage.
Coach Mike Tomlin says that with camp winding down, Friday’s final preseason game at Carolina will be the last chance for some players to impress the coaches.
The next roster cut will be to get to the final 53-man roster. It’s due on Tuesday.
With Brooks gone from the picture and cornerback Arthur Maulet suffering an ankle injury last Saturday against Detroit, Tomlin has been looking at his options for the reconfigured Steelers secondary.
Tomlin also said he’s looking forward to Friday’s game at Carolina because it’s a road game and the Steelers open on the road, September 12th at Buffalo.
