The Pirates erased a four-run deficit and rallied to beat Arizona last night.

Manager Derek Shelton says Kevin Newman, whose hitting has finally started to come around, has been solid defensively all season long.
Shelton says that over the final month of the season, the Pirates will be moving players to unfamiliar places in the field and in the batting order…and on the mound, too, such as Chad Kuhl pitching out of the bullpen as he returns from a covid-19 scare.
The Pirates called up Michael Chavis, the former Boston utility player who hit eighteen home runs for the Red Sox in 2019, and started him at second base last night. He was 0-for-4. Chavis said yesterday that he is ecstatic about joining the Pirates and reuniting with general manager Ben Cherington, who drafted him in the first round for the Red Sox in 2014. To make room for Chavis and returning outfielder Anthony Alford on the roster, the Pirates optioned infielder Rodolfo Castro back to double-A Altoona and infielder/outfielder Hoy Park to triple-A Indianapolis.
And without commenting on reports that Gregory Polanco had been waived by the Pirates on Sunday night, manager Shelton started Polanco in right field. He was 0-for-4, dropping his batting average to .197. Teams can still claim Polanco by 1 o’clock this afternoon.
