Pirates manager Derek Shelton says the Bucs, who have not beaten Wainwright since the 2016 home opener at PNC Park, need to figure out the Cardinals star pitcher quickly.
Shelton says the Pirates have a lot of meaningful baseball games left to play.
After yesterday’s game, the Pirates reportedly put outfielder Gregory Polanco on outright waivers. The highest paid player on the team, Polanco is hitting only .199 with 11 home runs, 34 RBI, and a team-leading 14 steals. His bunt single was one of only two hits by the Bucs yesterday. If no team claims Polanco by tomorrow, he is eligible to become a free agent or could accept an assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis. Polanco said last month that he wants to play his entire career in the Pirates organization.
The Pirates open a series tonight against the only NL team with a worse record than the Bucs, the Arizona Diamondbacks. (6:40 airtime on WCCS). Wil Crowe [3-7] pitches for the Pirates against Humberto Mejia, who will make his first appearance of the season with the D-Backs after going 0-2 last season.
