The Indiana County District Attorney’s Office says that local and state law enforcement agencies will be out in full force in a few weeks for the Labor Day holiday weekend and they will be on the lookout for not just those driving drunk, but driving while drug-impaired.
Law enforcement agencies in the county will be taking part in the “If you feel different, you drive different, drive high, get a DUI” campaign between now and Labor Day, meaning that they will be on the lookout for any impaired driver, whether they are drunk or high.
District Attorney Robert Manzi said in a news release that he wants to see the community safe from drug-impaired drivers. He said no matter what the substance is, no one should be getting behind the wheel if they are impaired. The Indiana County DUI Task Force will be working extra patrols over the upcoming Labor Day weekend to make sure highways are safe.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of drivers killed in crashes and tested positive for marijuana had doubled between 2009 and 2018.
As you get ready for the holiday, the DA’s office suggests:
- If you have used an impairing substance such as alcohol or marijuana, do not drive. Passengers should never ride with an impaired driver. If you think a driver may be impaired, do not get in the car.
- Do you have a friend who is about to drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs? Take the keys away and arrange to get them home safely. Don’t worry about offending someone — they’ll thank you later.
- Use Uber, Lyft, or a taxi service, rather than drive impaired.
- If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact 911.
