Training camp continued for the Steelers yesterday at Heinz Field with a lot of new things going on in preparation for Saturday’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions.
According to the latest practice report, the Steelers abandoned their traditional two-point conversion/short-yardage drill, known as “Seven Shots,” and for the first time, the first-team defense worked against a back-up offense that went off cards detailing plays ran by the Lions. The idea was to simulate a regular-season Wednesday, rather than a training camp Wednesday.
Defensive Coordinator Keith Butler said the new approach to practice was “good for us,” and that “It’s always better than practicing against our guys… We want to see what they’re doing, and some of the stuff [Detroit] is doing, we gotta stop is a little bit different than what our offense does.”
Head Coach Mike Tomlin said that practice went well for the team, and the big thing that needs to stay on the team’s forefront is that a realistic approach needs to be taken ahead of Saturday’s game.
Tomlin also commended the work of the younger players and newcomers to the team, saying their learning quickly.
Scary sight at practice yesterday as wide receiver Chase Claypool went down with an ankle injury, however an evaluation showed it was nothing more than a mild sprain.
Center Kendrick Green returned to the practice field after missing a few days for personal reasons. Guards Kevin Dotson and Trai Turner and tackles Chuks Okorafor and Zach Banner practiced with Green on the first-team defensive unit.
NFL:
Tim Tebow is no longer a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team cut him as it begins to shave its roster before the start of the regular season. Tebow had joined the team just a few months ago and was working to be a tight end. The former Florida Gators quarterback tweeted about his release, saying he was “grateful for the chance to have pursued a dream.” Tebow ended his tweet thread by thanking the Jaguars and everyone who gave him support.
