Among those whose names are being tossed around the trade rumor mill are Pirates relievers Richard Rodriguez and Chris Stratton. And The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported yesterday that teams are inquiring about the availability of David Bednar, the pitcher widely considered the frontrunner to inherit the closer’s role if Rodriguez is traded.
Steven Brault threw four innings in another rehab start for Indianapolis yesterday, giving up one run on one hit, with a walk and a strikeout. Brault has missed the entire season so far after injuring his back in spring training. He could be headed back to Pittsburgh for his next start.

The trade announcements were coming in like fastballs last night. Some of the big names joining new teams include Nationals ace Max Scherzer and his All-Star shortstop teammate Trea Turner, who are now Dodgers. The Nats also traded outfielder Kyle Schwarber to the Red Sox. The Cubs’ first baseman – and Pirates nemesis – Anthony Rizzo is now a Yankee.
Cleveland manager Terry Francona is taking a leave of absence from the team for the rest of the year to deal with health issues, of which he has several, including a staph infection in his foot.
