The Steelers put on the pads and started hitting yesterday at Heinz Field, with fans in attendance to see one of the most popular features of training camp, Backs On ‘Backers, and rookie first-round running back Najee Harris had everyone excited, including his coach, Mike Tomlin.
Harris was beaten twice in the rush drill by linebacker/safety Marcus Allen, but got better on his next two chances. Linebacker Alex Highsmith was a standout, as was tight end Zach Gentry in the 11-on-11 drills.
Tomlin was asked afterward if the play of some unheralded offensive linemen in camp has earned them a chance to become starters, and he said there are jobs to be had, and not just on the o-line.
Ben Roethlisberger was back at work after missing a day for personal reasons. Linebacker Devin Bush took a big step by practicing extensively for the first time as he recovers from knee surgery. Tackle Zach Banner was still limited. Tight end Erik Ebron ended his day early with elbow discomfort and backup offensive lineman Anthon Coyle left practice with a neck stinger.
