Indiana County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased over the month of June.
The new unemployment rate for the county is 6.6 percent, an increase of three-tenths of a percentage point during June. The statewide unemployment rate went down a tenth of a percentage point to 6.9 percent, while the national rate went up one-tenth to 5.9 percent.
Comparing Indiana County with our neighboring counties, Westmoreland’s unemployment rate is 6.0 percent, Jefferson County’s rate is 6.2 percent. Armstrong county is just above Indiana with a 7.0 percent unemployment rate, Clearfield County has a 7.2 percent rate while Cambria county is the highest with a 7.3 percent unemployment rate.
The lowest unemployment rate was tied between Chester and Montour counties, with each county reporting a 4.1 percent unemployment rate. The highest unemployment rate was Philadelphia County with 9.2 percent.
Total non-farm jobs in the Indiana area were down 1,300 over the month to 28,200. Jobs were unchanged from May in six of the nine published super-sectors. The other three super-sectors all fell with the largest decline in government, which was down 900 jobs due to the end of the semester at Indiana University. Jobs in all published super-sectors were either at or above their June 2020 levels.
