The Catholic Diocese of Greensburg yesterday announced that donation pledges to its Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership have grown to about $20 million for tuition aid to students at diocesan schools in the next five years and about $300,000 in donated services by contractors are helping the schools with capital improvements.
The tuition assistance program began last year with an anonymous donation of $2.5 million, with the donor agreeing now to extend the scholarship program another five years. More than 100 businesses and individuals have now joined the effort, committing the funds through the Pennsylvania Educational Income Tax Credit program. The program helped the diocese increase enrollment by 13.1 percent last year and increases of 10 percent are projected in the next five years. The diocese says all of its 13 Catholic schools have seen increases in the last year.
The contractor contributions include work done by Lindy Paving of New Galilee, which is in Beaver County, Golden Triangle Construction of Imperial, in Allegheny County, and Arch Masonry of Pittsburgh. Lindy Paving is sealing, restriping, and repairing parking lots at a number of schools, including Saint Bernard Regional Catholic School in Indiana.
