The Pirates finally broke their losing streak yesterday, and in doing so, broke Milwaukee’s winning streak.

The Pirates will welcome the Atlanta Braves to PNC Park for a three-game series starting tonight (6:40 airtime on WCCS). Chase De Jong (0-3, 5.65 ERA) pitches for the Bucs against Max Fried (5-4, 4.16 ERA), who had a 10th inning game-winning RBI single for the Braves as a pinch hitter on Sunday.
Baseball fans in general may not recognize an All-Star when they see one, but Major League players do. After failing to crack the top twenty in fan voting, the Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds yesterday was named an All-Star in balloting by his fellow players. Reynolds will join teammate Adam Frazer, an All-Star starter, next week in Colorado. Reynolds is batting .306 with 15 home runs, 21 doubles, and 46 RBI at the halfway point of the season. He turned it on in June, when he hit .376 with seven homers and 22 RBI. This is the first time since 2014 that the Pirates have had two All-Stars. Andrew McCutchen and Josh Harrison made it that year.
Pirates’ general manager Ben Cherington said yesterday that Altoona pitcher Roansy Contreras and shortstop Oneil Cruz will be examined in Pittsburgh after both came up with sore forearms last week. Contreras felt something as he pitched in a rain-shortened outing on Wednesday. Cruz felt a twinge on a throw from shortstop.
Cherington also said newly-acquired first baseman John Nogowski will likely be active for tonight’s game against the Braves. He was acquired from St. Louis on Saturday for cash. He was needed because of injuries to Colin Moran and Erik Gonzalez.
In other Pirates new, your dream of seeing Newman and Kramer as the Pirates’ double-play combination came to an end over the weekend. Cherington swung a deal with the Brewers, swapping Triple-A infielder Kevin Kramer for pitcher Nathan Kirby, who will go to Altoona.
