Earlier today, two Pirates pitching prospects were selected for the upcoming MLB Futures Game on Sunday, July 11.
Roansy Contreras (Altoona) and Quinn Priester (Greensboro) were named to the National League Future’s roster, giving two representatives from Pittsburgh since 2012, where Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon participated.
Contreras – who came to Pittsburgh as part of the Jameson Taillon trade this offseason – is quickly becoming one of baseball’s hottest prospects, holding onto a 3-1 record and a 2.00 ERA in eight starts with the Curve.
Baseball America ranks Contreras as the Pirates’ 13th-best prospect and 99th-best prospect in all of baseball. According to a news release from the Altoona Curve, Contreras ranks second in the Double-A Northeast League in ERA, strikeouts (64), opponent batting average (.178), and WHIP (0.84) – which is also the fourth-best in all of MiLB.
Priester – who the Pirates drafted 18th overall in the 2019 MLB Draft – is 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA this season with the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. He also tallied 37 strikeouts while walking only 15 in 38 innings pitched this season.
