At a meeting Tuesday night, the Blairsville-Saltsburg school board passed the budget for the first year of the re-named River Valley School District, but the vote was split between Blairsville and Saltsburg representatives.
The final tally for the budget came to a 6-3 vote, with Beverly Carnese, Holly Hall and Linda Brown voting against it. Brown said that she felt that voting for the spending plan would be a vote against Saltsburg.
The budget came to $35,698,525, with no tax increases for district residents.
It also came to a split vote when it came to approving raises for several positions in the district, including a 4 percent raise for Superintendent Philip Martell. This time, the argument centered around O. Garfield Jones rules of order, and the way the motion was made, a board member could either approve all the raises presented or reject them all. Beverly Caranese said that the motion should have been made differently.
The raises passed with six votes. Hall voted no, while Brown and Carnese abstained.
