Coach Mike Tomlin says the three-day mandatory minicamp which concluded yesterday at Heinz Field sets the stage for training camp next month, but he doesn’t know exactly where or when the camp will be happening.
Most NFL teams can report to camp on July 27th, but the Steelers and Dallas Cowboys, who are playing the Hall of Fame Game, can report as early as the 21st. Tomlin said yesterday that the league has not yet informed the Steelers of its location or starting date. The Cowboys have been told they can use their Oxnard, California training site. The Steelers would prefer to be at Saint Vincent College, but they have to be sure they can use their traditional training camp site under new covid protocols announced on Wednesday by the league and the Players Association.
Tomlin says wherever and whenever training camp is held, the minicamp has set the stage.
Tomlin says he can’t evaluate the minicamp’s success until he sees the Steelers’ final product at the end of the season.
The minicamp highlight from yesterday was a “punt-off” between veteran Jordan Berry and 7th round draft choice Pressley Harvin III. The competition got a little hot as other players cheered and jeered. Tomlin said afterward that the action “created adversity so guys have an opportunity to shine.” Berry was replaced by Dustin Colquitt at the start of last season but was brought back after Colquitt punted poorly.
